چکیده

A tensile split Hopkinson bar apparatus is developed for testing high strain rate behavior of glass-filled epoxy. The apparatus uses a specimen gripping configuration which does not require fastening and/or gluing and can be readily used for castable materials. Details of the experimental setup, design of grips and specimen, specimen preparation method, benchmark experiments, and tensile responses are reported. Also, the effects of filler volume fraction (0–30%) and particle size (11–42 μm) are examined under high rates of loading and the results are compared with the ones obtained from quasi-static loading conditions. The results indicate that the increase in the loading rate contributes to a stiffer and brittle material response. In the dynamic case lower ultimate stresses are seenwith higher volume fractions of filler whereas in the corresponding quasi-static cases an opposite trend exists. However, the absorbed specific energy values show a decreasing trend in both situations. The results are also evaluated relative to the existing micromechanical models. The tensile response for different filler sizes at a constant volume fraction (10%) is also reported. Larger size filler particles cause a reduction in specimen failure stress and specific energy absorbed under elevated rates of loading. In the quasi-static case, however, the ultimate stress is minimally affected by the filler size.

Dynamic tensile testing of ligaments from the human cervical spine

This study focuses on establishing appropriate experimental methodology to facilitate investigation of the dynamic stress-strain characteristics of soft bio-tissues. Dynamic mechanical tests were conducted on ligaments from the human cervical spine (neck), using a tensile split Hopkinson bar device. The strain rates imposed were of the order of 10~10/s. As ligaments are extremely soft and exten...

Mechanical response of pig skin under dynamic tensile loading

Uniaxial tensile experiments were performed on pig skin to investigate the tensile stressestrain response at both quasi-static and dynamic rates of deformation. A Kolsky tension bar, also called a split Hopkinson tension bar (SHTB), was modified to conduct the dynamic experiments. Semiconductor strain gages were used to measure the low levels of the transmitted signal from pig skin. A pulse sha...

DIRECT MEASUREMENT OF ISOTHERMAL FLOW STRESS OF METALS AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES AND HIGH STRAIN RATES WITH APPLICATION TO Ta AND Ta-W ALLOYS

A technique is developed for measuring the flow stress of metals over a broad range of strains, strain rates, and temperatures, in uniaxial compression. It utilizes a recent, enhanced version of the classical (Kolsky) compression split Hopkinson bar [l], in which a sample is subjected to a single stress pulse of a predefined profile, and then recovered without being subjected to any other addit...

Intralaminar shear loading effects on the damage process of multiply composites at impact rates

Composite materials, when they are used as structural elements to ensure absorption energy during impacts, can give better results than those of steel. However, their energy absorption capacities can be reduced due to some damage mechanisms, like intralaminar shear, which induce a premature failure. The aim of this study is to investigate the intralaminar shear effects at fibre-matrix interface...

Verification and implementation of a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar technique for characterizing biological tissue and soft biosimulant materials under dynamic shear loading.

Modeling human body response to dynamic loading events and developing biofidelic human surrogate systems require accurate material properties over a range of loading rates for various human organ tissues. This work describes a technique for measuring the shear properties of soft biomaterials at high rates of strain (100-1000 s(-1)) using a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). Establish...
